Realize that bodybuilding supplements come at a price. Yes. I believe they do aid in recovery and building muscle but the quality and quantity plays a huge role. Be sure to drink plenty of water while using supplements to help kidney and liver functions and also cycle on and off. Be sure to buy from a company you trust, know what ingridients are put in that supplement.

Between 2004 and 2013 the researchers found 839 cases of liver injury eligible for consideration: 709 were from drugs, and 130 from supplements. In the pool of 130 injuries linked to supplements, 45 (35%) were from bodybuilding supplements and 85 (65%) were from other supplements.

Bodybuilders are not the only users of supplements. “We know that some 50% of the US population uses dietary supplements, so half of all patients seeing physicians might very well be using them. The physician has to ask,” Dr. Navarro said.

Determining the cause of supplement-induced liver toxicity is complicated by the fact that these products aren’t regulated the way prescription drugs are, explained session comoderator Mary Rinella, MD, from Northwestern University in Chicago. Often what’s in the bottle isn’t what the label says, she pointed out.

Dr. Rinella cited a recent study that showed that products can be contaminated or substituted with alternative plant species and fillers, such as rice or wheat, which are not listed on the label.
